ITWorksME: Remarkable success in handling downtimes

18.12.2020

From his position as a panelist in the webinar, Chief Technical Officer at ITWorksME Salloum El Dahdaah stressed that investment employed on creating new product features should always be accompanied by perused studies highlighting the impact of any new feature on the product itself whether cost wise or from a technical perspective.

Digital platforms have caused a seismic shift in how the world gets its entertainment today. These platforms can absolutely turn the operation of your business into a real-time experience only with the right features and capabilities. This is where the infrastructure of product features ought to be wisely dealt with, a topic tackled during the MENA OTT and Anti-Piracy Webinar hosted by BroadcastPro, held between November 3 and November 5, 2020.

This is where most platforms fail, Salloum affirms. He pointed out to the sensitivity of creating improperly curated features for the high risk of failure it bears within.

KWIKmotion is keen on advancing new OTT features targeted to time-saving and practicality, whether in video management, live streaming on social media platforms, analytics, etc.. As eager as we are to support the needs and demands of our clients, we are bound in some cases to act cautiously and refrain them from adding a feature, which might not suit the platform or their needs in order to avoid potential failures, Salloum argues.

Streaming services are supposed to be fully featured end-to-end comprehensive platforms that cover all technical and functional aspects of operation. They shall include every attribute that makes a modern-day OTT service optimal and user friendly including content management, syndication, analytics data and social features but most importantly the ability to face server downtimes and recover in no time.

Recalling the incident when one of the major CDNs in the region went down, Salloum El Dahdaah, was asked about the remarkable aptness to get his cluster clients back up within four minutes while most of the global streaming services were down for four hours.

The risk of server downtime is always there despite taking every precaution imaginable. Whether caused by glitches, redundancy or simply at peak times, we should always be prepared, he asserted. However, setbacks are inevitable sometimes, citing the example of Netflix, one of the mammoth OTT services that went down few times in major areas.

ITWorksME has been in a state of monitoring and preparation for almost a year now. In result, we adopted a new multidisciplinary approach to face any downtime or failure at any point, El Dahdaah stated.

We have an intelligent system that keeps monitoring the service whether up or down concurrently from four distinctive geographical points. Whenever a location is down, streaming switches automatically to an alternative POP that is fully up. Our CDNs and POPs are monitored continuously so whenever one of them fails other arms swiftly activate to keep the stream up and running, Salloum explained.

Therefore, by anticipating failure and promptly recovering possible downtimes, we manage to maintain a satisfying quality of service for our clients in Lebanon and the MENA region, ITWorksME CTO Salloum El Dahdaah concluded.
